Salt in chemistry, is any compound formed
from an acid and a base through the
replacement of all or part of the hydrogen in
the acid by a metal or electropositive
radical. Common salt is sodium chloride. A
salt may be produced by chemical reaction
between an acid and a base, or by the
displacement of hydrogen from an acid by a
metal. As a solid, the ions normally adopt a
regular arrangement to form crystals. Some
salts only form stable crystals as hydrates
(when combined with water).
A common or sodium chloride salt is a salt
with the chemical sybol NaCl white
crystalline solid, found dissolved in sea
water and as rock salt (halite) in large
deposits and salt domes. Common salt is used
extensively in the food industry as a
preservative and for flavouring, and in the
chemical industry in the making of chlorine
and sodium.
